Milliken decided to take on the project when her doctor stated that she began seeing negative Yelp reviews for her practice, of which she was unable to reconcile with actual patient visits, she became convinced of fictitious reviews when a complaint from an author was posted describing symptoms for a patient she had never seen.〔
On the day following the film's initial press release and Kickstarter campaign, ''Business Insider'' reports that Yelp stock had declined by 4% in afternoon trading.〔
''The Hollywood Reporter'' announced on August 12, 2015, that public relations specialist, Michael Levine, will become the executive producer for ''Billion Dollar Bully''. Levine has represented 58 Academy Award winners, most notably Charlton Heston. The film has an unspecified budget, and some backers are requesting that they remain unnamed.
